Animation Process and equipment

I am using After effects mostly for my animation but i am also including some stop motion as well. I think these two methods together work for the music i have chosen for the video because it is quite unpredictable and sporadic.

My process started with Initial idea planning. Thinking of lost of different ideas and noting them down. Then analysing which ones are better than others and which ones have certain aspects that could be used with other ideas to strengthen them. The main goal of the animation is to suit the music which is in the video (Saukrates- Father Time)

StoryBoarding.
Although my storyboard ended up slightly altering from the animation. It is the crucial guide lines for  my animation. I storyboarded 6 scenes with 16 shots. Noting the character and assets movement, effects, text, audio and style



Asset creating
Before I could start animating on After Effects I had to create my assets that I was going to animate. I did this in Illistrator and made things like, Backdrops (grass, walls, sky etc.) Then I made characters and other elements like props for the characters to hold



Animation
I was using After Effects to animate so this involved the movement and adjustment of key frames to create character movement, Placing layers on top of other layers to get the desired compostion for my animation. I used a screen size of 1280 x 720



How far into Animation i am

My animation at present is incomplete, I have done around 1 minute of animation and still have a large portion of more complicated animation to do. have done 3 scenes out of  6 planned scenes. Overall I think it is going quite well but I need to improve the speed at which I do it at.

I still need to create a few new assets. I would be using illustrator to do this. I have found this is one of the most time consuming parts of the process so I am budgeting for this asset creating time.

I think to speed up my animation process time I will do a mix of a few techniques, including spot animation so I can get on with finalizing the process and creating an animation I am happy with in a time frame that will be quick enough.

P2 Final design analysis

My character has been stylized is relation to his characteristics. I have used a lot of straight lines and hard edges which reflect the attitude of the character. He is a very strong willed and determined character.  These hard lines also are because of his athletic qualities that are essential to his role in the animation. He is a dynamical stylized character who is created for action scenes and adventures.

I have created the body shape with short legs in comparison to the body and the head. Which is to reflect the hip hop style of the character. Resembling bboy characters. Also he is in urban styled clothes. A hoody and black jeans. These are fitted baggy to once again resonate with this hip hop stylized aspect of the show

Scheduling research


This reasearch has shown me the difference in time that it makes to create different animations and how their different mediums vary the production time. Its seen that  feature length animations like Frozen can take 2 years where as others  like the Simpsons and Adventure time are reasonably complicated 2d cell animation they will take anything from 8-9 months to complete. Where as simpler animation styles like South Park has a production length of only 6 days

StoryBoard Analysis

Idustry standard?
I think on the most part my storyboard resembles some industry standard examples. Although some of the movement and artistic technique used in industry standard storyboards is higher than mine. Noticeably on scene 3 shot 2 the movement could de depicted better.
Clarity?
Most scenes display what is going on resonably clearly and all major actions can be seen and interpreted
Could they be given to an animator?
I believe an animator could successfully build an animation around these storyboard without any other sources.
I also this they express the thought care and efort put into them. Although sometimes with limited detail all the postioning, movement and camera angles have been considered carefully

P2 PIXAR research



Pixar Animation studios are based in Emeryville California founded in August 1986. Founded by Ed Cutmill, Steve Jobs and Alvy Ray Smith. It is a wholly owned subsidery of The Walt Disney Company. In the 1970s Alexander Schare joined Ed Cuthill to try and create an animated film to a sound recording of 'Tubby the Tuba" They worked together with a team of people and although they didn't create a Tuby The Tuba but they did create some video artwork. the team to the West Coast in 1979 as part of Lucasfilm Ltd. They created a range of technical equipment including an imaging computer called 'Pixar' This proved to be a very important and high tech peice of kit it was so successful it was being used by the likes of weather forecasters and oil companies for their operations. So far the Studios have produced 14 films, Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, WALL•E, Up, Toy Story 3, Cars 2, Brave, and Monsters University. each one proving to be a big success. Toy Story alone having won 20 awards and grossed almost $400M worldwide. My personal favourite is Monsters inc which grossed over $550M worldwide. These films, in general have the same genre, adventure and comedy aimed at a family audience all done in the CG style. The movies are purposefully designed to appeal to    a very wide family audience because there is very little content that can be seen as controversial or offensive. Although Pixar animations are popular with all ages, their biggest influence is on children. Pixar's movies are notorious for creating extremely valuable franchises which incorporate a wide range of branded products which use the images of popular characters. Some products sold include soft toys, keyring, calendars and action figures. These products go a long way to re-inforce the image of the films and the the company. There aim is to create a sentimental attachment between viewers of the films (particularly children) and the characters. This is crucial to keeping the company making large sums of profit.




Pixar films on average have grossed over $602 million each.  They are some of the most successful animated films of all time. Not only through profit but they have also enjoyed great critical success. Since the first Toy Story Pixar have gained 24 academy awards for there animated feature films. There are many theories that could explain Pixar's success. The artistic and high detailed CG animation on its own does not make such a giant corporation excel in the way it has. It has been suggested that the key to creating a successful, relatable and financially viable Animated feature film is telling a great story, and a great story includes a relatable character or characters who express humility, whether they are heroic, brave, kind or comedic  the character must be relatable and memorable. Although just good characters are not the be all and end all. Pixar used conventional story structures which mean a protagonist character who overcomes challenges to become better or achieve a goal. Each successful chapter needs to demonstrate human qualities. Woody from Toy Story is one of the most recognisable and loved animated characters ever. Woody is a caring brave and kind hearted. To create a convincing character that people can relate to the character needs to portray another side to their personality. Woody when faced with challenges he can show selfishness, jealousy and anger. People relate to the frustration of such a likeable character creates an understanding between the film and the viewer.

Pixar soon became one of the biggest animation studios in the world and enjoying a very quick rise to success. It is thought its secret is the way it approaches the creative process. Most animation studios employ a team of freelancers to work on a project until it is finished and then cut them loose. Pixar's philosophy is to create a team of writers, directors, animators, and technicians who stay on and work from project to project. The result, (which is proving to be an effective operation) creates a unique working environment with a team of people who trust and help each other. An important part of the way Pixar works is their critical process. The team gather in a small room to watch clips of what they have made while "drinking coffee and eating Cap'n' Crunch". Everyone is encouraged to to critique everything, frame by frame. Even the most junior members are expected to contribute to this process. with backing from notable people such as Steve Jobs. The company has risen to success since 1986.

Pixar works with original ideas and have a highly skilled and experienced team of people who help deliver the very best products. Pixar practice 3 basic principles. Everyone must have the freedom to communicate with anyone. That means the leaders don't sign off on every decision, and sometimes may find themselves surprised during meetings. It must be safe for everyone to offer ideas. People at all levels are encourage to use email, for instance, to send feedback, good and bad, to the creative leaders.


Stay close to innovative ideas in academia. It publishes research and goes to industry conferences, because it thinks people are more important than ideas, and engaging with its community helps it draw the best people into their business. Which is ultimately the goal because Pixar believes without hardworking creative and original thinking people they cannot achieve the large goals that the company has set its self.
Pixar have had their premises designed in a way that people can interact and socialise so they can increase creativity by people talking to each other and to to "maximise inadvertent encounters" to increase productivity and creativity Other of the perks of being a Pixar employee are the fancy dress Halloween parties held on campus, at which John Lasseter hands out prizes for best costume. Creativity is a way of life, as proved by the employees’ customisable work spaces, some of which are themed and done up like miniature houses or Wild West saloons.

P2 First idea for a show (march 2014)

Format- TV series
A moose who is the pet of a Shoalin monk. He has magical powers, but he was kidnapped and all his moose juice was taken by the evil guy for evil reasons. Then he was dumped in a suburban area and found by a young boy. He takes him in as a pet. The boy and the moose need go on a mission to get back his moose juice so he can be taken back to his homeland. The moose juice has been spread around in lots of different places and as they find more and more the moose starts to get more power back.
Setting- Suburbia
Main Characters- Moose and boy
Supporting characters- Kid next door who always tries to help but is ultimately an idiot.

P2 Voice Talent

Perry

Character is, energetic, confident, adventurous as well as being quite childish but also responsible. Always looking to have fun and enjoy himself.

Type of voice actor needed is a young boy in early teens or an adult with a slightly high voice.
Needs to have an energetic twist to his voice. But also with a serious and caring side. Someone who could emulate a teenager to make it relatable for the target audience

Dream choice- Yuri Lowenthal
He was my ideal choice because i know that his voice acting style is suited to my character after analyising parts he has been in because of his role as voice actor for Ben 10 i know he can provide the energy required for my character. He is also already relatable to viewers who are around the age range i would be targeting. He has lots of experience and think he would be a very competent voice actor for what i need

P2 Character Profile Final Design annotation

Name- Perry
Age- 16
Identity- The taleneted young intergalactic pizza dilivery boy. Who delivers pizzas from planet to planet for his company
Family- Dad- PETER, Mum-PAM Sister-PATSY
Backstory- born into a happy family on the planet Pektos. He was spotted by the owner of the pizzarier when he was playing football in the park. He was impressed with his speed and offered him a job as a pizza delivery boy. He quickly became the best delivery boy they have.
Best friend- His pet dog Ezzo
Enemies-
Personality- Quick thinking, witty and brave. Never shy of confrontation and very willing to do his job well.
He in easily distracted by simple things which usually throws him off course. Also very forgetful about things (appart from pizza delivery, addresses ect.)
Skills- very fast runner. Acrobatically able, artistic and has a creative aprouch to problems.
Hobbies- enjoys sports and hip hop music
Hopes and Dreams- Really enjoys his job and just wants to keep doing it for now. Has a dream to race spaceships in the spaceship rally 3000

P2 Animation Product research

                     
Afro Samuri is similar t my 'Space Crust'. Because of the combat
based movements and dynamic straight lines and sharp edges style that
add an attitude and speed aspect to the
 animation. My show will also use a similar
hip hop based soundtrack. Which will add to
the atmosphere and appeal to the targeted audience


Adventure time follows the 2 heros, Finn, a human boy and Jake the dog
much like my product follows to characters, Perry the boy and Salami the dog.
They are together all the time and both have very strong bonds with each other. Unlike adventure time in my product the dog isnt humanized. He cannot talk but i think this adds a nice, unusual aspect to my project.

Rocket Monkeys
Rocket monkeys is set in space, same as my product. They travel around in a spaceship as a duo and a sidekick monkey. A lot of my product will also be set inside a spaceship. This show is also focussed around comedy and adventure whilst having a specific job to do, being secret agents and delivering pizza. a setting like this is popular because of many possibilities that can happen in this setting allowing for audashous and extraordinary plots

The Amazing world of gumball.
The Amazing World Of Gumball incorperates the same style of animation as my product and features characters around the same age. it is aimed at the same market at mine and consists of the same length of eposodes as my series will do

treatment


Treatment
My animation consits of an intergalactic pizza delivery boy called Perry. Perry is a confident, athletic, quick witted and create person who does take faliure well. Passionate about doing his job and to do it well. He has a thurst for adventure which can lead him to be sidetracked. His task is to deliver pizzas a across the galaxy. Making interplanetary stops which, more often than not are accompanied by space monsters,  devastating weather conditions or the inevitable interference by rival pizza deliver firm .

Perry starts off as an enthusiastic but minimally skilled employee. Over time he become better at his job and when he adopts a space dog from the planet Canidae. He becomes his best friend and they spend all their time together.
Every episode Perry is sent to deliver a pizza or pizzas somewhere. He delivers them with his pet dog in a spaceship. often coming into  trouble along the way. He is has a small amount of kung fu training which he uses (sometimes inappropriatly) to fight a host of space monsters and villians.
Each eposode will run for 22 minutes, 12 eposodes in a series

Typical day- Josh is 13 and goes to secondary school. He wakes up at 7:30 to get to school for 9. He has time in the morning to watch tv and he usually chooses to watch Cartoon Network. He is studying art, English, maths, sciences, german and humanities. He finishes school at 3:35 and 2 days a week has sports clubs after school. When he gets home from school he will oftern watch cartoons but when the weather is nice he will go out and play with his friends but he will need to be back for dinner. If he can he will choose to watch tv after dinner at around 7pm. At this time he may choose to watch non cartoons like wildlife programmes but will still check Cartoon Network to see what is on. He will go to bed around 10pm on a school night and 11:30 latest on a weekend

Hobbies and interests- He enjoys sports and playing with friends. Sports cliubs take up 4-6 hours of his week every week. He also does a lot of drawing and art at home as a hobbie. His favourite food is peperoni pizza and chips He like Hip hop music and is interested in current hip hop culture.
 
Spending Power- He gets and allowance from his parents which is £25 a month and he has a paper round which he get £30  a month from. So his spending power is partly reliant on his parents but he can also afford to pay for things he is interested in and his parents wouldn’t be willing to buy for him.
 








Typical Media consumption-
He watches, on average 30 minutes of cartoons in the morning and 1 – 3 hours of TV after school. He also plays on his play station. He likes games like fifa 13 and Call Of Duty Modern Warfare and enjoys the social multiplayer aspect to it.


The animation will appeal to him because it has similar astatic appearance as the other media he likes. For example the 2d animations on cartoon network and the graphic styles of b-boy characters which is a big influence to the style of the cartoon. The comedy is specifically tailored for his age group meaning he will find it humorous as well as entertaining.
